| Resumo | Until recently, it used to be a difficult task to find reflectance spectra of Brazilian soils in the literature, except for a few oxisol samples published by Stoner et al. (1980). More recently, Formaggio Epiphanio (1988)reported a larger number of samples, carried out in a broad-band radiometer in the 400- to 1000-nm range. Other studies by Stoner et al. (1991)and Bedidi et al. (1992)were also performed in a small number of samples within the spectral interval from 380- to 875-nm and 400- to 770-nm, respectively. Madeira Neto et al. (1993)have presented diffuse reflectance from 400- to 2500-nm on 56 samples, mostly from central Brazil. A study by Epiphanio et al. (1992)contains more than one hundred spectral reflectance determinations in the 400- to 2500-nm range. The samples, collected during previous soil surveys that were shortly described by Oliveira et al. (1992), are from the state of Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil. They were taken from surface and near-surface soil layers at 53 sites representative of fourteen taxonomic soil classes as defined by Oliveira et al. (1992). In this paper, we use the reflectance data set from Epiphanio et al. (1992)to demonstrate the potential of Principal Components Analysis (PCA)in identifying spectral characteristics that are responsible for the variance in the data set. In this way, the analysis can indicate spectral similarities among soil classes and the spectral contributions of some constituents (iron oxides, organic matter, opaques, moisture conditions, clay fraction). The quantitative analysis provided by Principal Components offers a fast, easy and insightful approach to retrieve spectral information from a cumbersome large number of spectra. |
